Ballet dancer Jung Jiwan, a 2nd year MA student of the School of Dance, officially joined the Gothenburg Opera Dance Company in Sweden. Jung was admitted to the orchestra after going through the competitive open audition held in Sweden, the last November. Jung’s tenure began on 29 July. He is the first Korean male dancer to join the Gothenburg Opera Dance Company. Meanwhile, he is the second Korean member of the company, following Kim Da-young who has been the member since 2023.
In the audition, Jung Jiwan vied for the post against about 1,500 world-class dancers from NDT, Hofesh Shechter Company, Rambert Dance Company, and more. Only 8 dancers, including Jung, survived it.
The Gothenburg Opera Dance Company is one of Europe’s best
contemporary dance companies. It belongs to Gothenburg Opera House in
Gothenburg, Sweden’s second-largest city. The company was initiated as a
classical ballet group, yet became a contemporary dance group in 2010. Ever
since, world-renowned contemporary dance choreographers, such as Jiri Kylian,
William Forsythe, and Yoann Bourgeois, have showcased their latest works with
the company.
