Choreographer Kim Min Placed 1st in the 29th MASDANZA, International Contemporary Dance Festival of Canary Islands
From Thursday, 17 to Saturday, 19 October, at the MASDANZA,
the International Contemporary Dance Festival of Canary Islands, in Spain, choreographer
Kim Min, a current MA student of the School of Dance, placed first in the solo
category.
MASDANZA, the contemporary dance festival held in the Canary
Islands, Spain, since 1996, is prominent for discovering young prospective contemporary
dancers from across the globe.
Kim Min’s award-winning piece, “Fan Made,” adopted a
fan, a symbol of the upper class in the Joseon Dynasty, as the main equipment.
Resistant to changes in the social system, the nobles in the late Joseon
period insisted on reserving their authority and dignity even after the class
hierarchy was discarded in the late Joseon period. The nobles, so-called “yangban,”
carried with them their fans even in the winter to brag about their social
status. Kim attempted to bring the idea of such a phenomenon into the
context of our life.
The jury complimented Kim’s work for its enchanting,
dynamic, and engrossing atmosphere. As well it was received, the work
accomplished success.
Kim Min acquired his BA in Choreography in the
Department of Choreography at K-Arts. He formed a dance crew, TOB GROUP, strengthening
his position as a contemporary dancer not only in Korea but abroad. Kim dreams of
walking the path of a choreographer who creates dance pieces needed in contemporary
times.
