Alumnus Filmmaker Jang Jaehyun Becomes the Winner of the Yu Hyunmok Film & 2 Arts Award in the 2024 Buil Film Awards

 

Director Jang Jaehyun, a graduate of the Department of Filmmaking, School of Film, TV & Multimedia, was named the winner of the Yu Hyunmok Film & Arts Award at the 2024 Buil Film Awards.

 

The Yu Hyunmok Film & Arts Award is a tribute to late filmmaker Yu Hyunmok. Filmmakers Lee Ran-hee, Yeon Sang-ho, Hong Sang-soo, and actress Bae Doona, prominent figures in Korean cinema, were past winners. Jang was recognized for directing “Exhuma” (2024) which drew 10 million viewers. Jang addressed, “I’m deeply honored to receive this prestigious prize. I’ll keep in mind Yu Hyunmok’s youthful spirit as an artist and always dare to make better films for audiences.”

 

Jang Jaehyun came to the spotlight with his short film, “12th Assistant Deacon” (2014), which won awards at several film festivals, including the Jeonju International Film Festival and the Daegu Independent Short Film Festival. As his feature film, “The Priests” (2015), starring Kim Yun-seok and Gang Dongwon made the box office hit, Jang was recognized as an emerging director by the public. After that, he built a sturdy fandom, continuously taking part in producing mystery and occult films, including co-writing the screenplay of “House of the Disappeared” (2017) and directing “Svaha: The Sixth Finger” (2019) and “Exhuma” (2024).
