Visual
Artist Chung Heemin Holds “Umbra” at Thaddaeus Ropac, London
Visual artist
Chung Heemin, who acquired her MA from the School of Visual Arts, exclusively signed
with Thaddaeus Ropac, presents “Umbra,” at the Thaddaeus Ropac Gallery in
London, from 8 October to 20 November 2024. It is her first exhibition in
Europe.
Chung examines the
sensual influence generated by Seoul as the city swiftly transits from darkness
to light or virtual to physical. She claims that technology has not only
brought convenience but has shaken the root of how space is associated
with time. In this exhibition, she reinterpreted the Korean traditional funeral
rite, “Chobun,” into painting, installation, and moving images.
Chung reinterprets
conventional paintings into poetic and abstract artworks by adding texture and
volume by various means. Since Lee Bul, she is the second Korean artist to hold
a solo exhibition at Thaddaeus Ropac, London.
Chung Heemin won
the 13th Doosan Yongkang Arts Awards in 2022. She held a solo
exhibition, “Receivers” at Doosan Art Center in 2023. She is currently tied
into an exclusive contract with Thaddaeus Ropac, where other renowned
artists such as Anselm Kiefer and Georg Baselitz from Germany belong. As Korean
artists, Chung Heemin, Lee Bul, and Lee Kang-so belong here.
