Professor
Park Eunyoung, School of Korean Traditional Arts, Identified as a Holder of
Local Intangible Heritage “Chunaeng-jeon”
Jongno
District has identified and proclaimed “Chunaeng-jon” as its first local
intangible heritage, and Professor Park Eunyoung as the designated heritage holder.
The
identification of local heritage is a system designed to discover, preserve,
and monitor cultural assets that have not been registered as cultural heritage by
the state, city, or province, but still possess important historical, academic,
and artistic value.
On
October 4, 2024, the Jongno District Office enacted the “Seoul Jongno-gu Local
Heritage Registration and Management Ordinance” and began recruiting
candidates. After a rigorous process including site inspections, source
investigations, and committee deliberations, “Chunaeng-jeon” was ultimately
selected.
Among
the many court banquets, “Chunaeng-jeon” is a magnum opus created by Crown
Prince Hyomyeong (1809-1830). Often referred to as the acme of court dances, it
is celebrated for its historical and artistic significance.
As
a work of exceptional traditional and artistic quality, “Chunaeng-jeon”
represents the cultural identity of Jongno District, the cultural heart of
Seoul.
Professor
Park Eunyoung, who was appointed as the holder, has devoted her career to preserving
and transmitting the traditions of court dances, including “Chunaeng-jeon.” While
directing municipal court dance group, Professor Park played a key role in conservation
and transmission of traditional court dance.
On
August 12 at the Alderman’s office in Jongno District, the district government awarded
the holder certification to Professor Park Eunyoung and announced full support
for “Chunaeng-jeon” for future generations.
Mayor
Chung Moon-hun emphasized, “We anticipate that the discovery and identification
of local heritage will enhance local patriotism and cultural pride. Jongno District
will continue to cherish our cultural resources and support efforts to promote the
excellence of local culture internationally.”
