Professor Oh Manseok, School of Drama, Stars in “True West”

Actor Oh Manseok, a professor at the Department of Acting in the School of Drama, will star in the play, “True West,” opening on September 30.

Published in 1980, “True West” is a signature work by American playwright Sam Shepard that has gained worldwide acclaim. It is also part of his Family Trilogy, which includes “Curse of the Starving Class” (1976) and “Buried Child” (1979). Shepard vividly and critically depicts the collapse, dissolution, and conflicts of family in modern society, which has grown desolate due to materialism.

The play was first introduced to South Korean audiences in 2010 as a licensed production. The story revolves around two brothers with completely opposite personalities, who, throughout the play, experience envy, hatred, and admiration for each other, ultimately exploring the inherent loneliness and duality of human nature.

Oh Manseok, who has directed theatrical productions since 2015, joins this season as both director and actor. As he did nine years ago in “True West Returns” in 2016, Oh plays Lee, an older brother – a drifting soul who wanders in the desert.

The play will be staged from September 30 to December 14 at Theater 2 of Yes24 Art One Theater on Daehak-ro.
