Pyeon Jangwan Appointed as the 10th President of K-Arts
On Thursday, October 2, the South Korean government
appointed Professor Pyeon Jangwan of the School of Film, TV & Multimedia as
the 10th president of K-Arts. Pyeon’s term of office will run four years, from October
2, 2025, to October 1, 2029.
K-Arts elected Professor Pyeon Jangwan as its
presidential nominee in an election held on June 25. In that election, Pyeon secured
65.2% of the votes from students, faculty, and school officials. Accordingly,
the President of South Korea appointed him as the new president of K-Arts upon
the recommendation of the Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism.
Pyeon Jangwan, the newly inaugurated president of
K-Arts, studied English Language and Literature at Chungang University and
Cinema Studies at New York University. He began teaching at the School of Film,
TV & Multimedia of K-Arts in 1995. In addition to his teaching duties, Pyeon
has served as dean of the school and as vice president for Academic and Student
Affairs. Beyond campus, he has held positions as the director of the Moving
Image Technology Association of Korea, international academic director of the Korean
Cinema Association, and board member of the Busan International Film Festival.
His distinguished career has earned him recognition for elevating the global prestige
of Korean cinema.
Chae Hwi-young, Minister of the Ministry of Culture,
Sports, and Tourism, stated, “We are confident that K-Arts, which ranked 19th
in the 2025 QS World University Rankings by Subject and 1st in Asia for
Performing Arts, will grow into a leading hub of international arts education,
shaping the future through creative and innovative teaching under President
Pyeon’s leadership.”
