Lee Dongyeong Appointed Secretary for Culture and Sports in the South Korean
Office of the President
Lee Dongyeon, a
professor in the Department of Korean Traditional Arts Theory at the School of
Korean Traditional Arts, has been appointed secretary for culture and sports in
the Office of the President of South Korea. The post had remained vacant for
four months since the launch of the new administration.
Secretary Lee is an
influential theorist known for his research on cultural theory and arts policy.
He is also active in the field of performing arts production and previously
served on the investigative committee that examined the artists’ blacklist
during the Park Geun-hye administration.
His appointment is seen as a strong
indication of major policy reforms in arts and culture under the new
administration’s vision, expected to have a positive impact on the broader arts
community.
With Secretary Lee Dongyeon’s appointment,
all five secretary positions under the Senior Secretary for Social
Affairs—covering health and welfare, employment and labor, education, gender
equality, and family—are now filled.
