Professor Lee Dongyeong Appointed Secretary for Culture and Sports in the South Korean Office of the President

Lee Dongyeon, a professor in the Department of Korean Traditional Arts Theory at the School of Korean Traditional Arts, has been appointed secretary for culture and sports in the Office of the President of South Korea. The post had remained vacant for four months since the launch of the new administration.

Secretary Lee is an influential theorist known for his research on cultural theory and arts policy. He is also active in the field of performing arts production and previously served on the investigative committee that examined the artists’ blacklist during the Park Geun-hye administration.

His appointment is seen as a strong indication of major policy reforms in arts and culture under the new administration’s vision, expected to have a positive impact on the broader arts community.

With Secretary Lee Dongyeon’s appointment, all five secretary positions under the Senior Secretary for Social Affairs—covering health and welfare, employment and labor, education, gender equality, and family—are now filled.
