Jeon Minchul Starts Off as First Soloist at the Mariinsky Ballet
Ballet dancer Jeon Minchul, who recently joined the Mariinsky Ballet in
Russia – widely regarded as the birthplace of ballet – officially began his
career as the First soloist after completing his work visa process. On October
18 (local time), the Mariinsky Ballet announced Jeon’s addition to the First Soloist
roster, the company’s second-highest rank, via its official website. Jeon thus
became the second Korean male ballet dancer to join the Mariinsky, following
Kim Kimin (33), who joined the company in 2011 as the first Asian male dancer and
was promoted to principal in 2015.
Jeon Minchul said, “I feel over the moon. It feels like chapter in my
ballet journey has opened. I will make my time at the Mariinsky shine with my passion
and sincerity for the art.”
The Mariinsky Ballet is structured into five ranks: corps de ballet, coryphée,
second soloist, first soloist, and principal. Jeon passed the audition last July
while studying at the School of Dance and was offered a soloist position upon
admission. In April, he won the grand prize at the Youth America Grand Prix, further
showcasing his talent, before leaving for Russia in June. He performed as a
guest artist while waiting for his work visa to be finalized.
Jeon’s first repertoire as an official member was Giselle, staged on
October 25. Jeon commented, “I finally joined the Mariinsky in October, a month
after the season began, due to visa delays, but it wasn’t a big deal. Starting with
Giselle, I will do my best to deliver strong performance every
time.”
