School of Dance Marks 30th
Anniversary with Academic Conference Series New Movements in Dance Studies
In celebration of the 30th
anniversary of its establishment, the Department of Dance Theory in the School
of Dance at K-Arts (President Pyeong Jangwan) will host an international
academic conference series titled New Movements in Dance Studies. The
series will take place over three sessions: May 30 at 8:00 a.m., June 1 at 8:00
p.m., and June 18 at 5:00 p.m.
Held online via Zoom, the series will bring together scholars from around the world to share current research trends and critical issues, while exploring the future of key disciplines within dance studies, including science and education, anthropology and history, and aesthetics and critique.
The first session, held on May 30 (8:00 - 11:30
a.m.), focused on “Practice-Based Study on Dance Wellness.” Professor Na
Kyungah (School of Dance, K-Arts) delivered the keynote address. Panelists
included dance and somatic practitioner Andrea Olsen; psychologists and dance
therapist Jo-Anne La Flèche; Lauren Dean of AT the Stage; and Laura Hanlon of
Studio du Corp.
The second session, scheduled for June 1
(8:00 - 9:30 p.m.), will feature a presentation by Professor Shzr Ee Tan (Royal
Holloway, University of London) on the theme “Steps Across Time: Reconfiguring/Recovering
Asia Dance, Age-less Movements, and Social Space.”
The third session, to be held on June 18
(5:00 - 7:00 p.m.), is titled “Reflections and Prospects for Dance Studies in
the Post-Humanistic Era.” Panelists will include Professor Sarah Whatley (Coventry
University), Professor Nanako Nakajima (Waseda University), Professor Melina
Scialom (Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts), and Professor Lee Jiseon (Sungkyunkwan
University).
