AT Lab Facilitates Conversation
Between Nobel Laureate and AI Character
The Art &
Technology Lab (AT Lab) at K-Arts showcased its latest AI-based interactive
content at the Nobel Prize Dialogue Seoul 2026, held at COEX in Seoul on
September 20. Co-hosted by Nobel Prize Outreach and the Korean Academy of
Science and Technology, the event brought together 1,200 participants to
explore how artificial intelligence is transforming the future of science.
During the
special session titled "Exploration of the Future of Visual
Storytelling," AT Lab presented Diamond Dust, an AI-based
interactive film directed by Nuri Jeon. The presentation was followed by a
dialogue between Sngmoo Lee, Director of AT Lab, and Adam Smith, Chief
Scientific Officer of Nobel Prize Outreach. David MacMillan, the 2021 Nobel
Prize laureate in Chemistry, then joined the session as a special surprise
guest, engaging in a live, real-time conversation with Kardi, the film’s AI
character.
Following the
demonstration, Professor MacMillan expressed his admiration for the experience,
noting that he was able to form a genuine emotional connection while having a
playful conversation with the AI character without direct human intervention.
Director Lee emphasized that artists must remain at the center of the creative
process, taking responsibility for shaping artistic expressions in the age of
AI.
Established in
2018, AT Lab is a creative research center dedicated to the convergence of art
and technology. The lab explores immersive media and generative artificial
intelligence to pioneer innovative forms of storytelling and artistic creation.
AT Lab’s
representative works include Scarecrow, an immersive project that has
received international acclaim through invitations to major festivals,
including the New Frontier section at the Sundance Film Festival and the
Raindance Film Festival. Other groundbreaking works—such as Scarecrow:
Rekindle and Diamond Dust—have been presented at Ars Electronica; 8
pm and the Cat was invited to Venice Immersive at the Venice International
Film Festival; and Fly To You was featured in the XR section of South by
Southwest (SXSW). These remarkable achievements continue to reinforce K-Arts’
global reputation at the forefront of convergence arts.
