Lee So-Yeon of the School of Korean Traditional Arts Stars in National Changgeuk Company of Korea’s New Korean Traditional Opera Chunhyang

Lee So-Yeon, an alumna of the School of Korean Traditional Arts and the lead actress in the National Changgeuk Company of Korea (NCCK) stars in the latest version of Chunhyang produced by the NCCK. She is coming back to play Chun-Hyang another time after she played the same role in 2010.

In the meantime, Lee played several roles in many other Korean operas including Ms. Ong in Madame Ong, Ae-Wool in The Story of L’Orfeo, and Jeom-Rye in The Wildfire. Even in 2014, she once again appeared as Chun-Hyang in Andrei Serban’s Different Chunhyang. Whereas Lee’s Chun-Hyang in Andrei Serban’s Different Chunhyang was the most avant-garde version of the character, her Chun-Hyang this time is most faithful to the original.

This year’s Chunhyang presented by the NCCK was on stage from May 14th through 24th at Daloreum theatre. It was also a special showing that celebrates the 70th anniversary of the NCCK.
