Alumna Violinist Lim Ji-young Presents Solo Concert in Seoul

Alumna Violinist Lim Ji-young Presents Unaccompanied Violin Sonata by Bach and Ysaye

Violinist Lim Ji-young (School of Music), who came into global prominence by being the first Korean to win the first prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2015, delivered Bach-Ysaye’s unaccompanied violin sonata. The concert was held twice: once on July 1st at the Seoul Cathedral and the other time on July 11th at the Consolation Hall of Seosomun Shrine History Museum in Seoul’s District of Jung.

At the first concert, she played Sonata No. 1, Partita No. 1 and 3 by Bach, and Sonata No. 1, 4, and 6 by Ysaye. On July 11th, she played Sonata No. 2 and 3, and Partita No. 2 by Bach and Sonata 2, 3, and 5 by Ysaye. The complete set of Bach’s unaccompanied sonatas and partitas, which puts a performer to the test with its difficulty, is known to be a monumental work ever written for solo violin. Bach’s sonatas explored the potential of the solo violin and served as the original inspiring the future generations of composers including Eugene Ysaye. Lim Ji-young said, “I try to ponder upon how to sustain the music now and into the future from looking back the past.”
