Kyunghwan Kwon Hosts Solo Exhibition "Opportunity"
Kyunghwan Kwon, an alumnus
of the School of Visual Arts, hosted the solo exhibition Opportunity at One
and J. Gallery from June through July. “Opportunity” is the name of a robot
rover sent to explore Mars, and it operated on Mars from 2004 to 2009. In his
exhibition, Kwon attaches legs to a robot vacuum cleaner Opportunity and let it
wander outside of the gallery and watch over the surroundings.
In the gallery, Opportunity
scans the space and transmits image data of what it sees. Through these images,
the spectators are guided to understand the world from Opportunity’s perspective
and see what was invisible before. As the exhibition touches on the humanity’s
desire to explore the unknown, the idea of capitalism by showcasing omnipresence
of robot vacuum cleaners in today’s everyday life and their brand values, and
both fears and expectations for artificial intelligence, Kwon generates “the
opportunity” in his own language.
