Baek Seok-gwang’s 2020 Baeksang Arts Awards Winning Play “Wife” Comes Back


A play “Wife” with which actor Baek Seok-gwang won the 56th Baeksang Arts Awards went back on stage from August 8th through 23rd at the Arko Arts Theater in Daehak-ro. Based on Samuel Adamson’s original play, “Wife” premiered in 2019 as a part of the Seoul Metropolitan Theater Company’s “Creative Platform-Director” project.

 

The peformance starts at where Henrik Ibsen’s “A Doll’s House” ends. The work goes back and forth the years of 1959, 1988, 2020, and 2042, telling the story of 80 years of the lives of four couples, through which it reflects the change in women’s rights and social perceptions towards sexual minorities. The main cast Baek Seok-gwang is also a winner of the Dong-A Dance Competition. Baek earned a bachelor’s degree in directing in K-ARTS, and ever since he came to eminence by playing the main characters in several plays including “The Lonely, The Tired, The Sad,” “Lady Hyegyeong,” “A Problematic Man Yeonsan,” “Roberto Zucco,” and “Sense of a Wife.”

 

He is also going to replay the same role he played before in “Incendies” from September 23rd through 27th at LG Arts Center.
