Department of Architecture in School of Visual Arts Joins in Venice Architecture Biennale with Seoul Unfolded  Exhibition

At the 17th Venice Biennale of Architecture in Italy from 22 May 21 through 21 November 21, the Department of Architecture in the School of Visual Arts runs the exhibition, Seoul Unfolded. This year, the curation theme is, “How will we live together?” Usually, the Venice Art Biennale and Venice Architecture Biennale each opens in turn, every two years.

However, the coronavirus pandemic deferred last year’s Venice Architecture Biennale to this year. And it will open with the Venice Art Biennale. Seoul Unfolded aims to showcase the education performance by the K-Arts Department of Architecture to design an advanced Seoul city through architecture. With a focus on agendas of the Department of Architecture and students’ design projects in Seoul and the neighboring areas, the exhibition displays the true face of architecture education of K-Arts in detail through hand and computer-drawn images of architecture, handcrafted architectural models, research papers, and interviews of K-Arts associates.

Under the co-direction of professors Taeyoung Kim, Byungchan Kim, and Kangmin Lee, current and past graduate students, affiliated professors, and other faculty members collaboratively participated in completing the exhibition. The exhibition space of Seoul Unfolded will allow the audience to easily spot the location and goal of every design studio at a glance.

The 3.2m-by-8m wall facing the main entrance of the gallery space hangs a large map of Seoul city and other project products. On the adjacent wall are the three agendas of “Space, Humanity, and Nature.” The two walls will be guidance for visitors to appreciate and understand the exhibition. Apart from that, Seoul Unfolded will also display key project outcomes by the “Media Studio,” educational materials used to expand the understanding of structural systems and modeling, and creative research work by thirteen faculty members.
